Lady Denman Cup news

The Lady Denman Cup is a creative writing competition run nationally for WI members every year. This year’s theme is ‘Amazing Discoveries’.

Using no more than 500 words, WI members were invited to write a piece of science fact or fiction describing a historic breakthrough, or a future invention as yet unknown.

We are pleased to be able to announce that the two entries the Avon Federation have chosen to go forward to the national level of judging are from Bradley Stoke WI. Well done, Marion and Helen and good luck!

Summer Outing to Denman

This year’s summer outing involved a visit by coach to Denman College, the WI’s educational facility in Oxfordshire. Those taking part broke their journey at Millets farm, where they met some of the lovely animals that live there. They then moved on to Denman, where they were shown around and enjoyed a nice afternoon tea.

The pictures below have been supplied by two of our members, Rosemary and Janet and give a flavour of this lovely day out.

Ladies Who Lunch

Thank you very much to Angela, the organiser of our new little ‘Social Club’, who arranged for quite a large group of our WI members to attend a ‘Ladies who lunch’ date at the Aztec Hotel on 26th June. A lovely time was had by all. Angie has a number of other ideas for such outings up her sleeve, so we shall look forward to enjoying more events over the coming months ๐Ÿ™‚

A brand new knee for our website administrator!

Apologies if things have seemed a little quiet on our website for a while. Our main admin lady, Helen, has been into hospital to have a total knee replacement op. She is now safely back at home, but hasn’t been up to computer based tasks for a little while. However things are now going well and hopefully there will be a few more WI news posts published very soon ๐Ÿ™‚

A visit from the ACWW

Our June meeting included a lovely cream tea. It seems that this is becoming an annual tradition ๐Ÿ™‚ Scones, clotted cream, jam and strawberries, followed an interesting talk by our visitors.

The speakers were senior representatives from the Associated Country Women of the World. We have collected ‘pennies’ for this organisation for several years and it was nice to have an opportunity to learn more about what the money is used for.

The ‘ACWW’ is a truly inspiring organisation, supporting women and their chosen community initiatives internationally. It changes lives and living standards for the better, providing opportunities for women in developing countries to help themselves. Do follow the link to the website of the ACWW, to explore just what a wide reaching and amazing organisation it really is. You will see that the ACWW includes many smaller womens groups within it, from many different countries. https://www.acww.org.uk/

Craft Club Quilting Projects

Members enjoyed a lovely Craft Club session this Tuesday afternoon.

A highly talented quilter kindly brought a couple of her latest projects in to show us. One depicted a beautiful, brightly coloured kingfisher, and the other had been designed to provide a wonderful selection of comforting ‘fiddly bits’ and textures to keep the hands of those suffering from dementia occupied. A great deal of work and thought goes into these beautifully sewn items. You are an inspiration, Rosemary!
